THE AROMDEE DYNASTY

Kingdom of G L A S S

Read: reflective, transparent

01. Flora & Fauna

01. Medicines, poisons, beasts and the tame

Within the glass dome of the Dynasty many faunae have evolved and adapted within the warmer climate (and perhaps the effect of magic upon the world), as well as many rare beautiful, potent and sometimes dangerous plants that have shot up from the more tropical terrain of the north. They have a reputation for cultivating agriculture, finding ways to least disturb the earth and their deceptively simple innovation works with designs in nature; providing space for plants and animals to passively contribute while also fulfilling their needs. It is very common for Aromdee Dynasty Snees to have a prowess in engaging with animals and controlling the growth of plants. It is not unusual for a Western Snee to have other animal friends on top of their Mammoth Bear or Sabertooth Tiger that they either look after or come back to visit them regularly.

Rare and unusual species are found all the time, usually in the form of animal hybrids for those that are brave (or foolish) enough to venture into the tropical jungles, and many ambitious biologists and monks may make their mark there in the knowledge they later share.

02. Relics

02. Legendary weapons and tokens of reverence

While everyone believes in reincarnation; the cycle of give and take from the earth and the bodies that walk upon it, not everyone practices the common courtesy in the using and the taking.

In the Aromdee Dynasty, these courtesies are practiced either by thanking a creature for the life it gives for your nourishment or thanking items for the use they provided as you give them up or throw them away.

It is a practice to show acknowledgement and respect to other beings in nature, practice of acknowledging spirits in the mountains, trees, prey animals as well as non-living things; tools, hair pins, weapons, etc. It makes some hereditary items or relics with a known history highly regarded, protected, and sacred, often being passed down through families. Weapons that have slayed famed and terrible beasts or foes become priceless artifacts, often being reserved for the executions of an opponent or foe considered as worthy.

There are cultural implications for this. To lose the sword of your father is a great dishonour, for it to shatter is bad luck, to repair the blade is both is to restore prosperity to your family and is considered good fortune- that you will be able to restore something else of great loss to you and yours.

Also, it is considered bad luck to go before certain grand natural landmarks without bathing (or other passed down customs), and if there is no opportunity for it, then going dire.

03. Food

03. A taste of the tropics

While nowhere as famed as the classic delights of East Snelandia, West Snelandia has a take on flavors and application of produce, that is all their own. Where the East has expertise in a palate that is sophisticated and balanced, the cuisine in West Snelandia appears more on rustic flavors and appearances; hearty, messy, savory and sometimes spicy. Dry noodles, stir fries and sushi are popular during the hottest summery days, whereas curries and savory barbecued meats over the fire are more popular during those cold nights. What is well known is the quality of the produce, the strange variety, and their strong teas, delicate tisanes and Sakes.

04. The Virtues

04. BALANCE & WHOLENESS #1

The Glass Emperor encourages his citizens to have full lives by sharpening the three different components of a person: body, mind and soul, instead of lives that are harshly forged in one direction, struggling for greatness and money. As a result, the practices of poetry and philosophical thought have thrived in the community, and there are generals or other military officials that are known for their great penmanship on matters of life, death, honor, family and war. The Emperor has also made basic hand to hand self defense available to everyone, and styles have even evolved to serve different purposes such as aiding the mind (Tai Chi). Those that progress into further knowledge often need either a bit of coin, talent, status or have otherwise won themselves favor in the Emperor- often accomplished in freeing Snees from the grasp of the pirates, or hurting their hand so that it might be so effective the next time.

It is acceptable to say that honor can be found even in many of the humbler lifestyles, although those in greater status may in secret have differing thoughts. But this belief holds a real grounding or placating effect, especially in the more rural territories of West Snelandia.

Everyone is considered to be one part of a whole, playing an essential part; a thread within a tapestry. So that there is a generally accepted idea that anyone can achieve a full, purposeful and fulfilling life; that even as status may fluctuate, no one is ever really considered lost, except for the high criminals. Even stains on the family can be righted again from performing honest work well, such as contributing back to the earth and the bellies of the people. However, lost honor and deflated ego is still that, and there are some that spend the rest of their lives trying to restore what was lost or strike back against components that were responsible.

This belief of balance is also applied to nature, where they practice working/living and inventing along with the flora and fauna. Exercising practices to not cost the earth/have the lightest impact.

04. FAMILY #2

Wearing traditional values, family structure is considered the building block of society. Providing for the family and not lifting a hand against members is apart of the oaths of every decorated warrior.

This focus is also meaningful in that the reputation of family members often extends to others within. Allowing a family to rise in status from noble deeds and honourable service, which provides also more opportunities. However, it can also work against individuals; those that stray too far from cultural values are cut off or often disassociated with, lest the shame also extends to them.

04. Bravery #3

Live in the face of death: In the military ranks, there is no presumption that anyone will live forever. A heroic death in battle is lauded down through ancestors and the community in story, as well as sometimes the inscriptions on the relics that get passed on from generations. It is seen as a glorious end.

Loyalty: Friendship and comradery are also encouraged among soldiers, so that they might look after each other and seek to rescue their friends in one way or another.

Lauded Rescuers: Snatching a fellow Snee out of the mouths of the pirates is seen as a great act of valour that is often awarded with different odds and ends; trinkets of pirates, an exotic creature, more land or a chance to study freely in one of the different martial schools. Nobles have been made this way; by crushing in pirate skulls and leading others to safety (in great numbers), as it is seen as an undeniably honourable service that cannot be properly repaid in the community.

The Ascension, or ‘ascent’: A common but not essential practice for young men between age 18-21 (and women who are poised to join the military) is to test their strength and the knowledge they have gained in the community by venturing into the icy Unclaim of the North and meeting with one of the indigenous tribes. Often the traveller brings some kind of gift or offering to give to the tribe leader or whoever’s house they sleep under (or campfire they sleep near), before the seek knowledge from them also. A cultural exchange, that is thought to make the recipient come back richer and strong; a survivor.

04. MERCY #4

Mercy killing: Taking one’s own life is not considered unlawful or distasteful in the line of battle and is a common among samurai to avoid being captured and tortured or humiliated by the enemy, this is especially true if the enemy is known to deliver embarrassing or defiling deaths. There is loyalty as well in mercy killing a friend if capture appears inevitable, especially if they know a sum for ransom would not be able to be attained.

Refugees are welcomed into the warm embrace of the Aromdee Dynasty, provided they can prove themselves through the disciplines and trials induction into citizenship.

04. KNOWLEDGE AND STORY TELLING #5

Scrolls, books, QSL dance and ancestral wisdom is shared with the community widely. There is a clear agricultural focus, then martial stances; and philosophical and poetical thought. There is a well emerging social anthropology writings on the people of other nations. The Glass Emperor has also encouraged oration, learning other languages and debating in the case Snees find themselves among foreigners either within the dynasty or when travelling afar. Expecting it would also help with tones and conveying or working through complex thought.

Military and Martial Prowess

There are four prominent schools of Samurai and martial artists, the fifth is notorious.

05. School of Boar – Bravery #1
Specialisation: close-range heavy melee
More coming soon!

05. School of Crane – Mercy #2
Specialisation: archery and finesse
More coming soon!

05. School of Monkey – Knowledge #3
Specialisation: famed military strategists, knowing the enemy, and pressure points (information that is not given lightly)
More coming soon!

05. School of Hornet – Nature/Balance #4
Specialisation: Hand to hand combat, sweeping the enemy of their feet, using the terrain as a weapon, elements
More coming soon!

05. The Fifth school: those that lie in the shadows #5
The forbidden school, Ninkyo Dantai – A necessary (and seemingly legal) evil
Specialisation: Stealth, poison, infiltration, guerrilla warfare
More coming soon!

There are still deviations from the schools and sub-classes.

Magic

The Emperor sees the utility of magic, not stopping those that wield it from doing so to protect themselves, however he does believe there are many out there that abuse it, and those thoughts more center in on particularly of those residing in Svalbard. The accepted general consensus is that magic is perfectly acceptable when green, and should be used to protect one another from the threats beyond the borders and those within, which particularly refers to red, (but not without also the use of tools, and knowledge, a lazy individual who relies solely on his magic to save him is seen as both as wasteful and a fool) when sanctioned- especially against pirates.

While grateful for the utility of his human counterpart- fingers and toes, he wishes to do something about the blackening, but has not yet figured out exactly how far he is willing to go, not seeing massacre as the answer.

Currently, while still on his conscious, it is considered a lesser manner as he tries to figure out how to tame or rid himself of pirates on his shores or waters. And if their passing were to help alleviate the pressure on the earth, then so be it.

04. Taboo and Non-Taboo Magics #2

Green and Red are both considered perfectly fine.

Blue is also fine, but also revered a bit in its focus on preserving life and its rarity among Snelandia. Blue mages would find themselves gaining citizenship easier, should they wish to pursue it.

Certain grey magic is seen as an ability that only should be practised by soldiers and those of important positions, seen as a magic that allows unsavoury types to operate in the shadows/get away unseen. There needs to be answering to those below rank that practice this in the Dynasty itself, but it’s teaching and learning is not seen without use with the dangerous animals and pirates that exist outside of the Dynasty, and it is here that these secrets are mostly considered useful for the common folk. Teleportation, mimicry of animals and levitation are seen as perfectly acceptable on the other hand.

Black magic is generally considered taboo by the people, and appearingly also by the Emperor. But if he sees the use for it, he may call upon them to perform tasks for him in secret or stay at his side as his Mage, as long as they don’t tamper with his own feelings or thoughts. It is must either fall away into disuse, or be controlled.

Blood magic is the one that is unforgivable; and will quickly earn one a burning at the stake.
